This year Happy Child International hosted two fundraising walks on June 15th and June 29th 2024 respectively for vulnerable children and young people that our partner projects support in Recife, Northeast Brazil.
Both the walks were set in the glorious Surrey/Kent countryside, and we mobilised 41 of our keen charity supporters to join us. These events give us the opportunity to meet and share about the charity in a more personal way. On these walks there is always a great sense of companionship and camaraderie.
On the Kent Walk we set off valiantly from Tatsfield Village in the rain. Umbrellas up. Our spirits were not deterred though, and we soldiered on. Thankfully in the afternoon the clouds broke, and we passed through some glorious countryside winding our way through the Titsey Estate. We saw wonderful wildlife such as deer and Longhorn cattle. Some of the terrain was quite strenuous and certainly a challenge for some. We covered 11 miles and finally we returned to Tatsfield Village Hall at around 6 o clock. It was a most enjoyable day.
Later in the month 25 of us joined the Surrey Fundraising Walk from Gomshall village, Surrey and completed 14 miles. The weather was absolutely perfect. Blue sky and temperatures of about 23 degrees. We did a figure of eight and initially passed through fields, woods and some National Trust land arriving back in Gomshall for a refreshing drink at the local pub. After lunch we completed the figure of eight by passing over open heath land, through woods and into the majestic Albury Estate. The walk highlight was, despite the queue, stopping off in Shere village to enjoy a delicious ice cream before completing the last leg back to Gomshall.
“It’s a great way to have fun and raise funds for a good cause” said one of our supporters.
“I would never find my way around such beautiful countryside without the excellent guide that the walk provides. Thoroughly enjoyed the day and being part of something meaningful and challenging” commented another.
“I am looking forward to next year’s walk. It’s a brilliant way to engage with an important cause and meet new people. Fundraising should be fun” said another walker who has regularly joined us over the years.
Like all non–profits we depend on our generous supporters to continue our vital work supporting vulnerable children and young people in Recife, Northeast Brazil.
This year the funds raised will go again towards the Mentoring and Skills Training Project run by our church-based partner Instituto Solidare. It provides vulnerable young people (16-18 year olds) from fragile communities in Recife, Northeast Brazil, with the vital skills they need to enter the job market. The project is making a life-changing difference to young people by enabling them to look forward to a better future and lift their families out of poverty.
We have been delighted with the generous giving from our supporters who have helped Happy Child International reach its fundraising target both on and offline. With the great support of our Chairman John Doddrell, the Kent walkers raised £2,345. Those who joined Caroline in Surrey raised £1,147.22. The total fundraising amount came to £3,533.22 which is a great achievement for two country walks.
Thank you so much to everyone who took part.
