Happy Child International’s Chairman of the Board, John Doddrell, secures significant funding for one of its key Brazilian partners.

For the last five years Happy Child International has partnered with Brazilian NGO Instituto Solidare supporting it financially to deliver the Mentoring and Skills Training Project. This important initiative is giving young people from low income communities a vital opportunity to train and prepare themselves for the workplace, opening the way for them and their families to secure a more stable future.

Instituto Solidare’s vision is to form citizens who can bring social transformation to their own environments. It has a strong track record of working with poor and marginalized communities in Recife and other parts of Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil.

The team believe that the lives of the vulnerable young can be improved through employment, education, income generation, skills training and the circular economy. Today we are delighted to tell our supporters that a door has opened through our Chairman, John Doddrell which enables them to completely re build their offices and important training facilities. The existing building was initially constructed  over 50 years ago and has been in desperate need of updating for some time so that Instituto Solidare can continue its vital work.

John Doddrell’s direct personal contact with the UK based Edward Gostling Foundation secured this funding direct to Instituto Solidare which has enabled them to start their much needed rebuilding project.  John Doddrell was present with Foundation Trustee Stephen O’Sullivan at the laying of the first foundation stone ceremony on Thursday 6th of February 2025.

John and Stephen respectively were able to deliver a few words at the ceremony which included the presence of local dignitaries from the region such as the Secretary of State for Social Assistance and the Secretary from the Municipal Council for the Rights of Children and Young People.

It is a huge encouragement to the team that the new building will be raised off the ground by stone pillars to better cope with annual flooding. The water from excessive rain fall and the river overflowing badly impacts the local communities. Recently hundreds of people had to be evacuated from their homes because of the rising flood waters.
